tar

Tar is a sticky, glossy substance produced by burning fossil fuels and can stick to anything it comes in contact with. This includes your raincoat, so when you find it's been stained by tar, act fast to avoid the stain setting permanently.

Materials Needed

  • Laundry detergent
  • Stiff brush
  • White cloth
  • Mild dish soap
  • White vinegar
  • Sponge

Instructions

  1. Before attempting any cleaner, start by gently scraping tar off with a stiff bristled brush. Do not press too hard as this could damage the fabric.
  2. If the tar is still present, fill a tub with lukewarm water, add laundry detergent, and agitate to create a sudsy mixture. Submerge your raincoat in mixture and allow it to soak for several minutes.
  3. Once it's finished soaking, take the raincoat out of the tub and rub it with a white cloth. Check whether the tar stain has come off after doing this.
  4. If tar remains, make a mild soap and water solution with a few drops of mild dish soap. Use the cloth to apply the solution to the stain, then rinse it off with lukewarm water.
  5. If the tar still persists, use a sponge to apply a mix of one part white vinegar and two parts water to area. Rinse it off and repeat if necessary.
  6. Allow raincoat to air dry or tumble dry on low heat before wearing again.

Conclusion

Removing tar from clothing can be a challenge but with these easy steps you'll have your raincoat looking as good as new in no time!
