tar

Whether you spilled some tar on your pullover or you got caught in an oil slick on the way home, tar stains are no joke! This sticky, black substance is notoriously difficult to remove, in part because of how easily it can spread. Fortunately, with the right tools and techniques, you can have your pullover looking good as new in no time. Here’s what you need to do.

Tools & Materials

  • Solvent (mineral spirits, peanut oil)
  • White cloth
  • Dry cleaning solution
  • Laundry detergent
  • Stiff brush
  • Paper towel
  • Vacuum cleaner

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Start by blotting away as much of the tar as possible using a white cloth and a solvent like mineral spirits or peanut oil. Use gentle strokes and be careful not to spread the tar around.
  2. If stain is still visible, mix a dry cleaning solution with water and use it to scrub the tar stain. Again, use gentle strokes.
  3. Once the tar stain is gone, dampen a paper towel and rub it against the area to remove any residue. Be sure to use plain water this time, as cleaning solutions can discolor the fabric.
  4. If the stain has been persistent, make a paste with laundry detergent and a little water and use a stiff brush to scrub the area. Afterwards, rinse the paste off with cold running water and let the pullover air dry.
  5. Once your pullover is dry, use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment to remove any dust or lint that may have adhered to the fabric during the cleaning process.

Tips & Tricks

  • Be sure to test any cleaning products on an inconspicuous area of the pullover before applying them to the stain! This will prevent any accidental discoloration.
  • If you have access to a professional cleaner, they may be able to help with difficult or persistent stains.
  • It’s important to clean the area as soon as possible after the spill occurs. The longer the tar is left on, the harder it is to remove.
