Tar can be very difficult to remove once it has settled into fabric. But with the right method, you can get rid of tar stains from ponchos in no time. Here's how:

  • If possible, rinse off as much of the tar as you can before treating the stain. After rinsing away any excess tar, lay the garment flat on an old towel or paper towels.
  • Take some sort of absorbent material such as talcum powder, cornstarch, or baking soda and generously sprinkle or spread it over tar-stained area of the poncho.
  • Let the powder sit on the fabric for 15-30 minutes or until it has absorbed all of the tar.
  • Gently brush away the powder with a soft brush.
  • If the stain persists, mix a solution of laundry detergent and water, then sponge the solution onto tar-stained area.
  • Thoroughly rinse off area with cold water to remove any soap residue.
  • If necessary, launder the item according to garment's care instructions. Line dry the garment.

With a bit of effort and some basic cleaning supplies, you can make your poncho look good as new by removing tar stains.
