Tar stains can be difficult to remove from polyester and other synthetic fabrics. Soap and water alone are not enough to get rid of a tar stain, however, there are a few simple steps you can take to get rid of the stain without damaging your garments.
Using a clean white cloth or paper towel, gently blot the tar stain to remove any excess tar. Do not rub the stain as this will only cause it to spread.
Choose an oil-based cleaner, such as butter, margarine or WD-40 and apply it directly to the stained area. Allow cleaner to sit for several minutes, then use clean white cloth or paper towel to gently blot the cleaner away.
Once the pre-treatment process is complete, launder the item according to garment care instructions. Be sure to use cold water and a mild detergent while washing the garment.
After laundering, check the stained area to see if the tar stain has been removed. If the stain is still visible, repeat steps 1-3.
Once the stain is gone, allow garment to air dry or tumble dry it on the lowest possible setting. Do not use high heat as this can cause the stain to set into the fabric.
Following these five simple steps can help you easily get rid of stubborn tar stains from polyester and other synthetic fabrics.
