Tar is a sticky, petroleum-based substance that can persist on fabric if not treated correctly. When dealing with a tar stain on your one-piece swimsuit, it is important to act quickly and use gentle yet effective cleaning methods. Here's how to do it.

  1. Lay the swimsuit on a flat surface. Gently scrape the tar off the fabric with a plastic knife, being careful not to damage the garment.
  2. Create a mixture of equal parts water and dishwashing detergent. Dip a clean rag into the mixture and gently dab the tar stain.
  3. Soak the swimsuit for up to 15 minutes in water and detergent solution, rinsing it occasionally.
  4. Apply a small amount of rubbing alcohol to a fresh rag and rub it onto the stain. Rubbing alcohol is a powerful solvent, so be sure to use it sparingly.
  5. Put the swimsuit in a washing machine with warm water, using a light-duty laundry detergent. Wash on the gentle cycle.
  6. Air dry the swimsuit, or tumble dry it on low heat if needed.

If stain persists after these steps, you may need to apply a spot cleaner specifically made for removing tar stains. Test any cleaning product on a small, inconspicuous area of the fabric before applying to entire stain.
