Tools and Materials Needed

  • Old toothbrush
  • Dishwashing detergent
  • Laundry detergent
  • White vinegar
  • Soft cloth

Step 1: Cleaning The Tar Spot

Combine a few drops of dishwashing detergent with warm water in a small bowl. Stir it until the detergent has dissolved and get an old toothbrush. Soak the bristles with the soapy solution and gently scrub the spot until the tar has loosened.

Step 2: Removing Stains

Once the tar has been broken up, work some laundry detergent into a soft cloth and use it to rub the area. Make sure to use circular motions so that the detergent completely covers stain. Leave it for a few minutes and then rinse it off with cold water.

Step 3: Final Cleaning

If stain is still visible, try using white vinegar. Dip a clean cloth in the liquid and dab it over the area until the stain disappears. Finally, use a damp cloth to rinse off vinegar and let the fabric air dry.

Tips

  • Do not attempt to scrub hard – this could spread the stain.
  • Avoid using hot water when cleaning as this could set the stain and make it more difficult to remove.
  • Test any cleaning product on a hidden part of fabric before using it on the stain.
