Using a blunt edge like a butter knife, scrape away any excess tar that is on the fabric. Take care to not press down too hard, or you may damage the fabric.
Mix one part liquid dish soap and three parts cold water together in a bowl. You should have enough solution to lightly saturate the area with the tar stain.
Soak a cloth in the cleaning solution and blot the tar stain. Be sure to not rub the fabric, as this can damage the material and cause the stain to spread. Allow the cleaning solution to sit for up to 10 minutes, then rinse the area with cold water.
Using a clean cloth, apply some laundry detergent directly onto stain. Gently rub the detergent into the fabric until the stain starts to come off. Wash the entire piece according to manufacturer's instructions and let it air dry.
