Start by using a butter knife or spatula to scrape off as much tar as you can from the surface of fabric. It may not look like much, but this step should help loosen remaining stubborn bits of tar, making them easier to get rid of.
Next, cover stained area with cooking oil. Olive oil or vegetable oil work well for this. This will help dissolve the tar, making it easier to remove.
Once the oil has been applied, let it sit for around 10 minutes. This will allow it time to penetrate the fabric and do its job.
After the cooking oil has had a chance to soak into fabric, place a paper towel over the tar-stained area and iron it. This should help draw up the tar, transferring it to the paper towel.
If the tar is still not fully removed, simply repeat the previous steps until the stain has disappeared completely.
When the tar has been removed, use a bit of detergent to clean the spot. This will help remove any excess cooking oil and help prevent spot from becoming soiled again.
Finally, wash and dry the jeans as normal. This will help ensure that all residue from tar stain has been removed.
