Tar is a sticky substance that can be difficult to remove. Fortunately, there are several techniques and products you can use to successfully remove tar stains from your jacket without damaging the fabric.
As soon as you notice the stain, take a clean cloth and begin to carefully blot at the area. Do not rub, as this will cause tar to spread. Continue doing this until most of the tar has been removed.
Take some rubbing alcohol and pour it directly onto the area. Gently blot at the stain for a minute or two. This should help to break up the remaining tar and loosen it from the fabric.
Check the washing instructions for your jacket. If it is machine washable, then fill up the machine with laundry detergent and cold water. Add one cup of baking soda to the mix to help break down the stain further. Then, set the machine to a gentle cycle and wash the jacket.
Once jacket has been washed, take it out and lay it flat on a towel. Let it air dry completely before wearing it again. The tar stain should be gone once it is dry.
