What is Tar?

Tar is a sticky, black residue that comes from burned wood, cigarettes, asphalt, and various other sources. The material is difficult to remove and can leave dark spots on fabrics and other surfaces.

How to Remove Tar Stains From Headphones

  • Start by wiping away any loose particles from your headphones using a dry paper towel or cloth. Do not use water as it may cause tar to spread.
  • Make a paste using 1 teaspoon of liquid dish soap and 1 tablespoon of baking soda. Stir the two ingredients until they form a thick paste.
  • Apply the paste to the stained area of the headphones using a clean cloth. Rub paste into the tar stain until the stain is completely gone.
  • Rinse off the paste using cold water and a clean cloth. Make sure to rinse away all of the soap and baking soda so that no residue remains.
  • Once the headphone cords are dry, you can wipe them down with a microfiber cloth to restore the shine.

Tips for Preventing Tar Stains on Headphones

  • Keep your headphones away from sources of tar, such as cigarettes and asphalt.
  • Be aware of the environment in which your headphones are stored. If you store your headphones near open windows, watch out for dust particles or pollen with tar-type residues from the outside environment.
  • Wipe down your headphones often with a clean cloth to remove any buildup of dirt or tar.
