Gather Your Supplies

You won't need a lot of materials to remove tar from your gloves:

  • Laundry detergent
  • Warm water
  • Soft cloth
  • Dish soap
  • Nail polish remover

Clean Tar Stains with Detergent and Water

To get started, mix equal parts laundry detergent and warm water in a bowl or sink. Use enough liquid so that the gloves can be completely submerged. Soak the gloves for several minutes, then gently rub the stained areas with a soft cloth to work the detergent into fabric of gloves. Rinse the gloves in cold water, then repeat the process until the stain is gone.

Try Dish Soap

If the tar stains remain, you can try using dish soap. Mix a few drops of dish soap with an equal amount of warm water. Gently rub the soap mixture onto the tar stains, then rinse in cold water. Repeat as needed until the stains are gone.

Remove Stubborn Stains with Nail Polish Remover

For stubborn tar stains, you can use nail polish remover. Dip a soft cloth in the nail polish remover and rub the stained area gently, being careful not to spread the stain to other parts of the glove. Rinse the gloves in cold water, then repeat as needed until the stain is gone.

Wash and Dry Gloves Thoroughly

Once you've removed the tar stains, be sure to wash the gloves in the washing machine using the recommended temperature for the fabric. Then, air dry the gloves, rather than using a dryer, as the heat can set any remaining stains into the fabric.
