The first step to cleaning tar stains from georgette fabric is to determine if the fabric is color-fast. Test fabric for color-fastness by wetting a corner of the fabric and applying a few drops of liquid laundry detergent. Rub fabric gently between your fingers, then rinse the fabric under running water. If the color of the fabric remains unchanged, then the fabric is considered color-fast and you can proceed with cleaning.
The next step is to select the right products for removing the tar stain. Use a mild, non-abrasive cleaner, such as dish soap, white vinegar or a commercial stain remover, to remove the tar. Alternatively, you can use rubbing alcohol or nail polish remover, but these should only be used as a last resort as they may discolor the fabric.
Once you have selected your cleaning product, apply it directly to the stain. If using a commercial stain remover, follow the package instructions. Leave the cleaning product to sit on the stain for 10 to 15 minutes before laundering.
Machine wash the fabric with warm water and a mild detergent, using the regular cycle. Make sure to add a color-safe bleach if fabric is bright colored. Do not dry the fabric until the tar stain has been completely removed.
Once the fabric has finished washing, check the stain. If the stain is still visible, repeat Steps 3 & 4 until the stain has been completely removed. Once the stain is gone, dry the fabric according to the care label.
