The first step is simple but important – using a knife or razor blade, scrape off any loose bits of tar that are stuck to the fabric. Make sure to scrape in one direction so that you don’t spread stain out. Once you’ve scraped off as much of the tar as possible, it’s time to move onto the next step.
To break down the tar and loosen the stain, you’ll need an oil-based product that has solvents. Petroleum jelly or WD-40 are two good options for this. Gently rub some of the product into the stained area until it’s completely covered. Allow the product to sit on the stain for 15 minutes, then brush off excess with a soft brush.
Now that you’ve applied the oil-based product, it’s time to rinse fabric. Begin by rinsing the stain with warm water, then follow up with a mild soap solution. Work the soap into the fabric with your hands or a soft brush, then rinse thoroughly. If you have a steam cleaner, you can use it instead of the water and soap to help loosen and remove the tar.
If the tar stain is still visible after you’ve finished cleaning, repeat above steps until it’s gone. Some stains may require multiple treatments before they’re fully removed. Make sure to always test product you’re using on a small area of the fabric before treating the entire stain.
No one likes dealing with tar stains on their favorite fleece, but with these simple steps, you can easily get rid of them! Just remember to scrape off any loose pieces of tar, apply an oil-based product, rinse with warm water or a steam cleaner, and repeat the process as necessary until the stain is gone.
