Step 1: Make a Soap Solution

Make a soapy solution by combining one teaspoon of liquid laundry detergent or dish soap with two cups of warm water. Mix it together until the ingredients form a lather. This solution will help to break down the tar and separate it from the fabric.

Step 2: Apply to Stained Area

Using a clean cloth or sponge, apply the soapy solution directly onto the tar stain. Be sure to rub the area gently to ensure the soap gets into the fibers of fabric.

Step 3: Let Soak for 15 Minutes

Allow the solution to soak into the fabric for around 15 minutes. Do not let the solution dry on the fabric as this can cause further damage.

Step 4: Rinse with Water

After the 15 minutes are up, rinse fabric with a damp cloth. Be sure to use cold water as hot water can set stain further. Repeat this step until the stain has been completely removed.

Step 5: Washing Machine

Once the tar stain has been removed, put the garment in the washing machine on a normal wash cycle. Don't forget to add a good quality detergent to the cycle, such as Tide or Persil. Include similar colors when washing the item as this will help to reduce any fading.

Step 6: Air Dry

Once the cycle is complete, hang the item outside to air dry. Do not put the garment in the dryer as this can cause further damage and set the stain.
