Espadrilles are a stylish and comfortable way to dress up your warm weather wardrobe, but they may not stay looking neat for long. Tar stains can quickly set in, ruining your look. Fortunately, there are easy steps you can take to keep your espadrilles looking their best.

The first step is to remove any tar that is still loose on the espadrilles. Take a flat object with a hard surface, such as a butter knife or an old credit card, and scrape gently away at the tar until it comes off. Do not press too hard to avoid damaging the fabric of the shoes.
Once you have scraped off all of the loose tar, it's time to treat the area with a nail polish remover. Make sure the remover contains acetone, as this will be the most effective cleaning agent. Put some of remover onto a soft cloth and dab it onto the tar stain. Do not rub or scrub, as this can spread the stain further.
Once the nail polish remover has had a chance to lift the tar stain, rinse it off with cold water. Make sure to do this gently – rubbing and scrubbing again can spread stain further. Let the espadrilles dry completely before moving on to the next step.
Once the espadrilles are dry, you can apply a mild soap to the area to further loosen the stain. Use a gentle motion to work the soap into the fabric. If stain still persists, repeat Steps 2 and 3.
Finally, make sure to follow the washing instructions on your espadrilles to make sure the tar stain is fully removed. This usually involves machine-washing the shoes on a cold cycle. Air dry your espadrilles afterwards and enjoy your newly cleaned shoes!
