Step 1: Rubbing Alcohol or Mineral Spirits

The first step to cleaning tar stains from earplugs is to use a cloth dampened with rubbing alcohol or mineral spirits. Gently rub the stained area for several seconds to lift away the bulk of the tar. Be careful not to rub too hard, as this could damage the earplug’s material.

Step 2: Soap and Water Solution

Once the bulk of the tar has been removed, make a soapy solution of warm water and mild dish soap, and use a cloth dampened with this to scrub remaining tar stain away. Be sure to rinse the earplug with clear water afterwards.

Step 3: Let Air Dry

Once the earplug is free from tar stains, let it air dry before putting it back in your ears. This will ensure that all of soap residue has been removed, and your earplugs will be ready to go.
