Before you start cleaning, make sure you have the supplies needed to prevent further damage to your draperies and curtains:
Mix a few drops of mild detergent into a small bowl of lukewarm water. Dip a soft-bristle brush into the solution and start scrubbing the tar stain in a circular motion. Make sure you work outwards from the stain and avoid scrubbing too hard.
Once the stain has been removed, mix an equal ratio of white vinegar and water in a separate bowl. Dip a clean sponge into mixture and gently press it against the stained area. Allow mixture to soak in for 10-15 minutes, then wipe away excess liquid with an absorbent cloth or towel.
Tar stains can often leave a strong odor behind, so it is important to deodorize the area after cleaning. Sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda or cornstarch directly on the stained area and let it sit for 15-20 minutes before vacuuming it up. This will help to absorb any lingering odors.
If you want to be extra thorough, you may want to use a steam cleaner on the area. The steam will help to remove any remaining tar residue from the fabric and will also help to deodorize it. Be sure to read instructions carefully before using the steam cleaner on your draperies or curtains.
Tar stains can be stubborn and difficult to remove from draperies and curtains. However, with the right supplies and a bit of elbow grease, you can easily remove tar stains and get your draperies and curtains looking as good as new.
