Start by pre-treating the tar stained area with a liquid detergent or laundry pre-treatment spray. Allow the detergent to sit for several minutes. Use an old toothbrush to scrub the fabric gently. Rinse area with cold water and wipe away any remaining soap residue.
For stubborn tar stains, heat up 1/4 cup of cooking oil in the microwave for approximately 15 seconds and then pour it over the stained area. Let the oil soak in for a few minutes before using a small brush or toothbrush to break down the stain. Rinse area with cold water afterward and repeat as needed.
Pour white vinegar onto the stain and let it soak for 10 minutes. Scrub tar stain with a sponge or a small brush. Rinse the area with cold water and repeat as necessary.
Apply a small amount of rubbing alcohol to a cotton swab or clean cloth and rub onto the tar-stained area. Rinse away the rubbing alcohol with cold water. Repeat until the tar stain is completely gone.
If none of these methods work, it may be time to call in a professional cleaner or dry-cleaner. Let them know that you have a tar stain that needs to be removed from your Dashiki.
