Begin by scraping off as much of the tar residue as you can with a butter knife or plastic scraper. Be careful not to further damage the fabric while you do this.

Once the tar has been removed, mix a solution of mild laundry detergent and warm water. Dip a clean cloth into the solution and dab at the stained area, working from the outside edges inwards. Do not rub or scrub too hard, as this could further damage the fabric.

After you have removed the majority of the stain, rinse the fabric with cold water and inspect it for any remaining tar stains. If there are still some stubborn areas, try using a commercial spot remover to treat the fabric. Follow the directions on the package before rinsing the fabric with cold water again.

Finally, hang the fabric outside and let it dry naturally in the sun – the ultraviolet rays will help to break down any remaining tar residue. Once it is completely dry, machine wash it as normal.
