tar

Cotton voile is a lightweight, semi-transparent fabric made from cotton. It's often used for blouses, dresses, curtains, and home furnishings. Unfortunately, this delicate material is prone to staining, particularly from tar. Tar is a gooey, black substance that can be found on roads, driveways, and parking lots – and if it gets stuck to your clothing, you'll need to act quickly to remove it.

What You'll Need

  • Your regular laundry detergent
  • Laundry stain remover
  • A spoon or blunt knife
  • A sponge
  • Laundry pre-treatment spray
  • Dish soap
  • White vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • Warm water

Cleaning Your Cotton Voile

  1. Before you begin, check the care label on your garment and make sure you are following the instructions properly.
  2. Gently scrape off as much of the tar as possible using a spoon or blunt knife. You don't want to rub stain into the fabric, so go slowly and be careful not to damage the garment.
  3. Pour a small amount of laundry detergent and laundry stain remover directly onto stain. Rub the mixture lightly into the area with your fingers.
  4. Using a damp sponge, rub the affected area in a circular motion until the stain starts to lift. Make sure to change the water as needed.
  5. Spray the stained area with a pre-treatment spray and let the garment sit for five minutes before rinsing.
  6. Mix a solution of one teaspoon of dish soap, one tablespoon of white vinegar, and two tablespoons of baking soda into two cups of warm water. Soak stained area in the solution for half an hour.
  7. Once garment has been soaked, rinse it with cold water and rub in gentle circles with a damp cloth until the stain is gone.
  8. If necessary, repeat the above steps until the tar stain is fully removed.
  9. Finally, launder your garment following the instructions on the care label.

Conclusion

Removing tar from cotton voile can be tricky, but it is possible! With the right products and technique, you'll be able to get rid of those pesky stains and restore your favorite clothing item.
