What You'll Need

  • Olive oil
  • Dish soap
  • White vinegar
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • A soft-bristled brush (optional)

Step 1: Treat the Stain With Oil

If your clothing has a fresh tar stain, the first step is to apply a light coat of olive oil to it. Gently work the oil into the fabric with your fingers or a soft-bristled brush. Let it sit for about 10 minutes.

Step 2: Wash It Out

After the oil treatment, wash the garment in lukewarm water with regular dish soap and white vinegar. Let the clothing soak for 20 minutes before washing it in the washing machine. Use high-temperature water for best results.

Step 3: Use Hydrogen Peroxide

If the stain is still present after the wash, use hydrogen peroxide to get rid of it. Make a solution of one part hydrogen peroxide and two parts water. Soak the garment in solution for 30 minutes before washing it again in the washing machine.

Step 4: Line Dry

Finally, line dry the clothing instead of using a dryer. This will help ensure that the stain doesn't set and become harder to get out.
