Step 1: Pre-treat

The first step in getting rid of tar stains is to pre-treat the stained area. To do this, use a mild detergent or solution and mix it with warm water. Apply this mixture directly onto the stain and let it sit for 30 minutes before washing.

Step 2: Rub

Once the pre-treatment has had time to set, gently rub the stained area with a soft cloth or brush. This will help to loosen up any remaining dirt or grime before you wash the fabric. Repeat this step a few times until stain is gone.

Step 3: Wash

Once the stain has been rubbed, it's time to wash the fabric. Use a gentle cycle and cold water. For extra protection, add in a color-safe bleach. This will help to ensure that the tar stain doesn't bleed or fade during the wash.

Step 4: Dry

After the wash cycle is complete, hang the fabric outside to dry. Try to keep the fabric out of direct sunlight, as this can cause fading. It's best to let the fabric air dry naturally. If you must, you can use a low heat setting on the dryer to speed up the drying process.

Step 5: Repeat

If the stain still remains after the washing and drying process, repeat steps 1-4 until the stain is completely gone.

Tips

  • Always use a gentle detergent when washing cotton seersucker.
  • Be patient when trying to remove tar stains. It may take several rounds of washing and drying to get rid of them.
  • If the stain is particularly stubborn, try using a commercial stain remover to help loosen it up before washing.
  • Dabbing stain with rubbing alcohol may help to loosen it up.
