Step 1: Apply a Dry-Cleaning Fluid

Dry-cleaning fluid is specially formulated for removing tough stains like tar. Gently apply it over stained area and let sit for 10–15 minutes. Then use a soft cloth to blot the area until dry cleaning fluid has been fully absorbed.

Step 2: Shampoo Away the Grease

Once the dry-cleaning fluid has done its job, you can move onto shampooing the fabric in order to remove any remaining grease or oil. Work the shampoo into the fabric with your hands or a soft brush and then rinse off garment with cool water.

Step 3: Finish with a Stain Remover

To finish up, use a commercial stain remover according to product instructions. Apply a light mist of the remover over the affected area, leave on for 15 minutes, then wash the fabric as normal in cold water.
