Step 1 – Scrape Away any Excess Tar

Use an old, dull knife or the back of a spoon to scrape off any excess tar from the corduroy fabric. Apply gentle pressure, as pressing too hard could damage the fabric.

Step 2 – Rub the Stain with Petroleum Jelly

Apply some petroleum jelly to a clean cloth and rub it over the tar stain. The petroleum jelly will help to break down the tar, making it easier to lift. Allow the petroleum jelly to rest on the stain for at least 10 minutes.

Step 3 – Soak Stain in Laundry Detergent

Mix together two tablespoons of laundry detergent with two cups of cold water. Soak stained area of the corduroy fabric in the solution for 20 minutes.

Step 4 – Rinse the Fabric

Rinse fabric with cold water, using a sponge to remove any residue of tar stain and detergent. Make sure to rinse until no soap remains.

Step 5 – Dry the Fabric

Lay the fabric out flat to allow it to dry completely. Avoid using a hairdryer, as this could cause the fabric to shrink.

And there you have it! These five steps will help you easily and effectively remove tar stains from corduroy fabric.
