Removing Tar Stains With WD-40
WD-40 is a multipurpose lubricant spray that can also be used to treat tar. Before attempting any cleaning method, it’s important to test it out on a small, hidden part of the bag to make sure no discoloration occurs. If it looks safe, then you can proceed.
- Grab a clean, soft cloth and spray some WD-40 onto it.
- Gently rub the affected area of the bag with the cloth in circular motions.
- Continue to do this until the tar begins to lift away.
- Once the tar has been removed, use a clean, damp cloth to gently wipe away any remaining residue.
- Let the bag air dry.
Removing Tar Stains With Peanut Butter
If you don't have WD-40 on hand, peanut butter can also be used to treat tar stains. Peanut butter is an effective and convenient way to remove tar from leather or fabrics.
- Grab a spoonful of creamy peanut butter and spread it over the affected area of the bag.
- Let the peanut butter sit for a few minutes to allow it to penetrate the stain.
- Once the peanut butter has had a chance to work, use a soft, damp cloth to scrub the area in circular motions.
- Continue to do this until the tar is lifted away.
- Thoroughly rinse peanut butter off with a wet cloth and then air dry.
Additional Tar Stain Removal Tips
- If the tar stain doesn't come off right away, try reapplying the removal method and letting it set for longer.
- When possible, avoid scrubbing too hard or for too long as this could damage the material of the bag.
- It can take a few tries to completely remove the tar stain, so be patient.
- For stubborn stains, try soaking the bag in warm soapy water.
