What is Charmeuse?

Charmeuse is a lightweight, smooth fabric made from silk or polyester. The fabric is soft and it drapes very well, which makes it popular for clothing items such as blouses, scarves, and evening gowns.

What Causes Tar Stains on Charmeuse?

Tar stains can occur from many sources, such as contact with a drippy tar roofing patch, getting too close to someone smoking, or running into a smoker in public. Tar particles are tiny and they will easily stick to delicate fibers of charmeuse.

What You Will Need

In order to successfully remove tar stains from charmeuse, you will need:

  • Mild laundry detergent
  • White vinegar
  • Old toothbrush
  • Clean towel

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Start by testing a small, hidden area of the fabric for colorfastness. Do this by applying a drop of detergent to the material with a cotton swab.
  2. Mix a solution of 1 teaspoon of detergent to 1 quart of warm water.
  3. Soak the stained area with the detergent solution for up to 15 minutes.
  4. Using an old toothbrush, gently scrub the stained area to remove the tar.
  5. Rinse with cold water.
  6. If stain persists, mix equal parts white vinegar and warm water, then soak the stained area once more.
  7. Gently rub the area with your fingers to help release the tar.
  8. Rinse the area with cold water. Blot with a clean towel until stain is gone.
  9. If the stain persists, repeat steps 6-8.

Tips and Tricks

  • Do not rub too hard on the charmeuse fabric - it is delicate and can be easily damaged!
  • Be sure to rinse the area thoroughly after each step to avoid any residue.
  • Once the stain is removed, launder as usual.
