To get started, start by washing the item with soap and water. This will help remove some of the excess tar and make it easier to remove the rest.

Once the piece is washed, apply a small amount of a solvent-based cleaner directly to the stain. These cleaners are specially formulated to break down sticky substances such as tar. Let the cleaner sit for a few minutes before scraping off the tar with a plastic putty knife.

If the tar is still present after the first application, apply another layer of the cleaner and let it sit for a few minutes before repeating the scraping process. Continue this process until all of the tar is gone.

If stain is still present, repeat the process but using a stain remover instead of a solvent-based cleaner. Stain removers are designed to lift out stubborn stains, so they may be more effective than solvents in removing tar.

Once tar is gone, give the garment a good rinse to remove any residual cleaner or tar residue. Hang item to dry, then inspect the fabric for any remaining discoloration. If any staining is still present, repeat the cleaning process until it is fully removed.

Removing tar stains from chambray garments can be a tricky process, but with a few simple steps your favorite items will be as good as new!
