tar

Nothing is worse than finding your favourite cashmere sweater smudged with tar. When you invest in luxury fabrics, you want them to last and age gracefully.

Tar is a thick, sticky substance made of asphalt, coal, or other organic material like wood. It is otherwise known as bitumen, and it is difficult to remove from surfaces because longer it sits, the harder it becomes to clean. Fortunately, if you act quickly, you can get tar stains out of cashmere apparel while preserving its delicate fibers.

What You'll Need:

  • 2-3 Cotton Balls
  • Rubbing Alcohol
  • Mild Detergent
  • Small Soft-bristled Brush
  • Towel

Before you attempt to remove tar stains from cashmere clothing, be sure to check the label for washing instructions. Some cashmere garments might be dry-clean only, so always read the care label before you start cleaning any garment. If you can, perform a spot test on an inconspicuous area of the fabric to ensure detergent won't discolour or damage the material.

Removing Tar Stains From Cashmere

The key to removing tar stains is to act quickly. Here are the steps to follow for efficient and safe removal of tar spots from cashmere:

  1. Take a few cotton balls and dip them into rubbing alcohol. Dab the cotton balls onto the stain until it is saturated.
  2. Gently rub the area, using a circular motion, until the tar starts to dissolve.
  3. Once tar has been softened, rinse the spot with cold water and blot area with a towel.
  4. Apply a small amount of mild detergent to the stain and use a soft-bristled brush to work it into fabric.
  5. Rinse and blot the area again, and then allow the fabric to air dry.

Be sure to only dab the distressed area with a towel and never rub, as this can cause the fabric to stretch and lose its shape.
