Start by applying a stain remover made specifically for tar and asphalt. You can find this type of remover at local hardware stores, or purchase it online. Read instructions carefully before applying, as some may require mixing before use. Scoop a spoonful of the stain remover onto stained area and gently rub it in – use a butter knife if necessary. If you don’t have a pre-made tar stain remover, you can also use turpentine or rubbing alcohol.
Let the stain remover soak onto the cargo pants for a few minutes. This will help loosen stain so it can be easily removed. Then, use paper towels to blot the area and absorb as much of the stain and remover as possible.
Once the stain remover has had time to work, use a toothbrush to scrub the remaining stain. Start from the outside of the stain and work your way inward. This will ensure you don’t accidentally spread the stain further. Scrub until the stain is completely gone.
Pour a fabric detergent into a spray bottle and dilute it down with water. Spray the detergent directly onto affected area. Let it soak in for a few minutes, then toss your pants in washing machine and launder as usual. When line drying, avoid direct sunlight, as this may cause the stain to set permanently. For best results, dry on low heat.
