Tar stains can be tricky, but they don’t have to be permanent. There are several steps you can take to help remove these stubborn spots and preserve quality of your cardigan sweaters:

  • Start by pretreating the stain with a laundry detergent or fabric softener mixed with hot water. Use an old toothbrush to dab the detergent mixture onto the fabric, then allow it to sit for 15-30 minutes.
  • Once pretreatment is complete, soak the sweater in lukewarm water for 1-2 hours. This will help loosen the particles and make them easier to remove.
  • After the stain has softened, hand wash the sweater in a sink with warm water and liquid dish soap. Work the soapy water into the stain with an old toothbrush and rinse the fabric off with clean water.
  • To finish, air dry the cardigan away from direct sunlight. Once the sweater is completely dry, give it another inspection for any remaining stains.

If you’re unable to remove the tar stains by handwashing, you may need to opt for a more powerful solution. Try soaking the garment in a mixture of 1 cup of white vinegar and 2 tablespoons of salt for 1 hour, then rinsing in cold water. Allow the sweater to air dry afterwards.

Keeping your cardigan clean and looking its best is possible with a bit of hard work and the right cleaning methods. With the tips above, you can quickly remove tar stains and ensure your sweaters stay cozy and comfortable.
