Before beginning cleaning process, it's important to remove as much of tar as possible. Use a knife or similar tool to carefully scrape away any hard, dry patches or lumps. Work slowly and be careful not to tear the canvas. Make sure any excess particles are removed before proceeding.
Once you have scraped away as much of the tar as possible, apply a bit of turpentine to stain. Gently massage liquid into fabric with your fingertips. This will loosen the remaining tar and make it easier to extract.
Once you've massaged the turpentine into the canvas, it's time to wash it. Soak the item in a sink or bucket with warm water and laundry detergent. Allow it to soak for a few minutes and then work the soap into the fabric with your hands. Rinse the canvas with clean water and then hang it up to dry.
With these three simple steps, you can successfully remove tar stains from your canvas items. Just keep in mind that working quickly and gently is key. The sooner you address stain, the better chance you have of completely eliminating it.
