If you've got tar stains on calico fabric, first step is to clean off as much as possible with a paper towel. Be careful not to further spread the tar stain and try to remove as much as you can without pushing it into the fabric. For tougher stains, consider using a paint scraper or razor blade to carefully scrape away the remaining tar.

Once you have removed as much of the tar as possible, the next step is to use a cleaning solvent. There are many commercial solvents available for tar stain removal, but rubbing alcohol can work almost as well. First, dab a small amount of rubbing alcohol onto a cloth and gently rub the stain until it softens. Then, use more rubbing alcohol to remove the remainder of stain.

Another option is to use a mixture of warm water and dish soap. Start by mixing one tablespoon of dish soap with two cups of warm water in a bowl or bucket. Then, completely soak the stained area with the solution and let it sit for at least an hour. After that, rinse area with cold water and repeat as needed until the stain is gone.

A few other items you may want to consider using when trying to remove tar stains from calico fabric include a pumice stone, nontoxic degreaser, and WD-40. Again, be sure to use caution when attempting any of these methods, as they could cause damage to the fabric.

With the proper cleaning and treatment techniques, you can safely and efficiently remove tar stains from calico fabric. And, with a little bit of patience, you can restore your calico back to its original condition.
