Removing Fresher Stains

If your apron only has a few, fresh tar stains, then it will be easier to remove. A strong liquid detergent and some lukewarm water should do the trick. Then, simply follow these steps:

  • Mix the detergent and water to form a thick, soapy solution.
  • Soak the stained area for 10 minutes.
  • Scrub area with a soft brush.
  • Rinse off the soapy water.
  • Allow apron to air dry.

Treating Older Stains

If the stains have been around for a while, they will be harder to remove. Start by rubbing the stain with a cloth soaked in mineral spirits. This should help break up the tar and make it easier to remove. If that doesn't work, try using one of these two techniques:

  • Mix some liquid detergent with white vinegar and baking soda. Dip a cloth into mixture and then rub it onto the stain. Rinse off and repeat as needed.
  • Make a paste of laundry detergent and boiling water. Rub this paste onto the stain and allow it to sit for 30 minutes. Wipe off the paste and use a wet cloth to rinse off the remaining residue.

Preventing Further Stains

To reduce likelihood of future tar stains, always use a protective layer underneath your apron. This could be a plastic tarp or a drop cloth. That will provide some protection against spills and splatters so you don't have to worry about cleaning your apron as often.
