What You’ll Need for Cleaning

  • A clean cotton cloth
  • Saddle soap
  • Warm water
  • A brush with soft bristles

Step 1: Pre-Clean Shoes

Before getting started on the more involved cleaning process, use a soft cloth to remove any loose dirt or dust from the surface of Vans. This will give the suntan lotion stain a chance to come off easier later.

Step 2: Apply Saddle Soap to a Cloth

Take the saddle soap and apply it to a dry cloth. Make sure to use an ample amount so that you have enough to really rub into the fabric of the shoe.

Step 3: Gently Rub the Stain

Move the cloth in circular motions, gently rubbing the saddle soap onto the stain. The goal is to get it to penetrate deep into the fabric so that it can take the suntan lotion with it.

Step 4: Rinse with Warm Water

Once the saddle soap has been rubbed into the fabric of the Vans, rinse the affected area with warm water. Continue to rinse until all of the saddle soap has been removed.

Step 5: Use a Soft Brush

Gently scrub the affected area with a brush with soft bristles. This will help to remove the remaining residue from the stain, including any stubborn pieces of the suntan lotion.

Step 6: Let the Shoes Dry

Allow the Vans to air-dry or absorb moisture with a dry cloth. Do not place them in the dryer as this can cause damage. Once dry, the suntan lotion stain should be gone!
