Step-by-step instructions on cleaning suntan lotion stains
- As soon as you notice stain, remove the excess suntan lotion immediately with a clean cloth or paper towel.
- If you're dealing with a dry stain, you’ll need to dampen the area with cold water first. Make sure not to rub the stain; just wet the surface lightly.
- Spray the stain with a pre-treatment product meant for tackling oily stains. This will act as an emulsifier to break down the oil in the suntan lotion.
- Using a brush or a soft-bristled toothbrush, scrub the stained area gently.
- Fill a bucket or a sink with lukewarm water, then add a scoop of laundry detergent and submerge the affected area. Soak for 15 - 20 minutes before running the tartan through a gentle cycle in the washing machine.
- Once the washing cycle is finished, inspect the garment to see whether the stain has been removed. If there is still some discolouration visible, repeat steps 3 to 5.
- Finally, hang your tartan piece up to dry. You can hang it outdoors, but be sure to keep it in a shady area to prevent fading.
Additional tips
- Always check the labels on your clothes to make sure they’re suitable to be cleaned in the washing machine. Some delicate fabrics may require handwashing instead.
- The type of laundry detergent you use matters. Avoid harsh chemicals and opt for something that is mild and free of dyes and perfumes.
- If you’re dealing with a particularly stubborn stain, try using a stain remover specifically designed for oil-based products.
