What You'll Need

  • White vinegar
  • Dish soap
  • Baking soda
  • A clean towel

Step 1: Pre-treat with Vinegar

Start by soaking a clean towel in white vinegar, making sure the entire stain is covered. If garment is large, you may need to use more than one towel. Once completely wet, let sit for about 10 minutes. The acidic nature of the vinegar will help dissolve the staining oils.

Step 2: Dish Soap Wash

After 10 minutes, apply a generous amount of dish soap directly to the stained area. Rub the soap in with your fingers or a soft cloth. Let the soap sit for another 10 minutes before throwing your garment into the washing machine.

Step 3: Baking Soda Solution

If the stain remains after washing, it's time to break out the baking soda. Mix a tablespoon of baking soda with two tablespoons of water to create a paste. Rub this paste into the remaining suntan lotion stain and let sit for 30 minutes. Rinse off with warm water.

Step 4: Check Stain

Once you've followed all four steps, check the stain again. If it has faded, great! Your swimwear is ready to wear. If not, you may want to try one more cycle in the washing machine.
