The most important thing to remember is that treating suntan lotion stains quickly is key. Immediately after staining, use a damp cloth to dab away any excess lotion and then place your garment into the washing machine using an enzyme detergent.

If the stain is more stubborn, first try soaking the fabric in a mixture of lukewarm water and a teaspoon of liquid dish soap before washing. After washing, inspect the fabric to determine if the stain still remains. If it does, try applying a pre-wash stain remover to the affected area and then wash the garment again. Alternatively, combining equal parts white vinegar and cold water and soak the fabric for 30 minutes. Then rinse with cold water and launder in the usual manner.

For tougher stains, you may need to sprinkle a diagnostic amount of non-bleach powder detergent on stain and let it sit for 15 minutes before laundering. Additionally, rubbing the stain with lemon juice or hydrogen peroxide can help lift the stain off the fabric.

When in doubt, it’s best to take your suit to a dry cleaner to professionally treat the stain. They will be able to assess the severity of the stain and give you the best advice on how to treat it.
