It’s summertime and you want to take a relaxing beach stroll. Before you do that, you slather yourself with SPF 50 suntan lotion. You pick out your favorite skirt for the occasion, never thinking that this seemingly harmless lotion could leave stains on your clothes.

Suntan lotion is mainly composed of two ingredients - mineral oil and wax. Mineral oil does not easily wash off with detergent and often requires a few special steps for complete removal. As a result, you need to take a different approach to remove suntan lotion stains from skirts than regular laundry.

Step by Step Guide to Removing Suntan Lotion Stains from Skirts

Step 1: As soon as you notice the stain, treat it right away. Cover the stained area with cornstarch and let it sit for 10 minutes. This will absorb the excess oil from the garment.

Step 2: After 10 minutes, brush off the cornstarch. Apply a small amount of dishwashing liquid or liquid laundry detergent to the stained area and rub it gently with a soft cloth. It’s important to use gentle pressure in order to avoid damaging the fabric.

Step 3: Now, place the garment in a basin of cold water and let it soak for 5-10 minutes. After that, rinse the garment thoroughly with cool water.

Step 4: Lastly, soak the garment in a mixture of 1 part white vinegar and 2 parts water for 30 minutes. Then, wash it with your regular laundry detergent in the washing machine as usual.

Tips for Preventing Suntan Lotion Stains on Skirts

1. Wear Protective Clothing: Whenever you are exposed to suntan lotion, make sure to wear clothing that will cover exposed skin. This will prevent the lotion from coming in contact with your clothing.

2. Apply Sunscreen Before Dressing: When you are getting ready to go outside, apply suntan lotion beforehand. This will allow the lotion to absorb into your skin before you put on your clothing.

3. Change Your Clothes: If possible, try to change into clothing that won't be affected by the suntan lotion (e.g. pants instead of skirts). This will help keep your clothing free from stains.
