Step 1: Scrape off as Much Excess Lotion as Possible

Using a dull knife, gently scrape off as much excess suntan lotion as possible. Do not use a sharp knife, as this could damage fabric. Take care not to push the lotion deeper into the fabric while doing this.

Step 2: Apply Dish Soap to the Stained Area

Dish soap is one of the best solutions for tackling suntan lotion stains because it can penetrate and break down the oily residue. Grab a rag or sponge, dampen it with warm water, and then apply a generous amount of dish soap. Rub stained area gently with the rag until the dish soap begins to work its magic.

Step 3: Use Club Soda to Lift the Stain

Use a spray bottle to apply club soda onto the stained area, and then let it sit for about 5 minutes. After that, gently rub area to help lift the stain. Once stain has been lifted, rinse the shirt thoroughly with warm water.

Step 4: Apply Detergent to Stain

If stain has not been completely lifted by the club soda, it’s time to try a laundry detergent. Apply a dab of laundry detergent onto the affected area and let it sit for at least 30 minutes. Then, using a rag or sponge, rub the stain until it begins to lift up.

Step 5: Soak the Shirt in Vinegar

If all else fails, you can try soaking the shirt in vinegar. Fill a bucket or sink with cool water and add one cup of white vinegar. Soak shirt in vinegar solution for 30 minutes, then scrub the stain with a rag or sponge. Rinse the shirt off with warm water, and then launder it as usual.

Safer Tanning with Sunscreen

Neglecting to apply sunscreen when out in the sun can cause painful burns and leave permanent suntan lotion stains on shirts and other garments. To ensure a safe and healthy tan, make sure to wear sunscreen. And, if any suntan lotion does find its way onto your shirt, follow steps above to remove the stain.
