While most stains seem intimidating to tackle, you don’t need to worry—you can easily remove suntan lotion stains from your shantung fabrics with the correct cleaning techniques and supplies.

What Materials Do I Need?

You will need the following materials in order to properly clean suntan lotion stains from shantung fabrics:

  • Clean white cloths or towels
  • Water
  • Laundry detergent or bar soap
  • Vinegar
  • Borax
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Ammonia

Steps to Remove Suntan Lotion Stains from Shantung

  1. Blot stained area of the shantung fabric with a clean, white cloth or towel. Do not rub the stain, as this may cause damage to the fabric.
  2. Mix one teaspoon of mild laundry detergent or bar soap with two cups of cold water. Stir the mixture until all of the detergent is dissolved.
  3. Using the cloth, dip it into the solution and dab it onto stain. Do not rub the fabric, as this can cause more damage.
  4. Continue dabbing at the stain until it has been removed.
  5. If stain persists, create a paste of one teaspoon of water and one teaspoon of vinegar and spread it onto the stained area. Let it sit for 15 minutes before rinsing it off with cold water.
  6. If the stain still won't budge, combine one teaspoon of borax with one cup of warm water. Soak the stained area in solution for 15 minutes, then rinse with cold water.
  7. For stubborn stains, mix together one tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide and one teaspoon of ammonia. Dab the mixture onto the stain and let it sit for 15 minutes. Rinse with cold water.

Tips

  • Blot the stain as soon as possible to remove as much of the suntan lotion as possible.
  • Be sure to test any new cleaning solution on a small, inconspicuous area of the fabric first.
  • For oil-based suntan lotions, use a dry-cleaning solvent to help loosen the stain.
