Using a butter knife, gently scrape away any excess suntan lotion from clothing fabric. Be sure to use an up-down motion so that you don’t cause any frays or tears in the fabric. Even if you don’t see any excess lotion, it’s still important to do this step in order to remove any particles that are embedded in the fabric.
Once you’ve scraped off any excess lotion, you’ll want to pre-treat the stain. To do this, mix equal parts liquid laundry detergent and white vinegar together in a bowl. Then, using a sponge or soft cloth, apply the solution to stained areas and allow it to sit for 15-20 minutes. After that, rinse the area with cold water.
Because suntan lotion is an oil-based product, it’s important to use a liquid detergent specifically designed for deep cleaning. Follow the instructions on the packaging, and be sure to use cold water when washing the garment.
Once the garment has been washed and rinsed, hang it up to air dry. If possible, avoid putting the garment in the dryer, as this may cause the stain to set even further. As an alternative, you can also lay the garment flat on a clean towel and allow it to air dry.
