The first step in removing the stain is to identify what kind of suntan lotion you’re dealing with. Oil-based lotions are more difficult to remove than water-based ones, as they tend to penetrate the fabric’s fibers more deeply. If you’re dealing with an oil-based lotion, you’ll want to start by applying a generous amount of liquid dish detergent directly on the stain.
Let the detergent sit for about 15 minutes before rinsing it off with cool water. You may need to repeat this process several times in order to successfully remove stain. Afterward, you’ll want to launder the fabric using the warmest temperature setting that is still safe for fabric.
If you’re dealing with a water-based lotion, first use a spoon or dull knife to scrape off as much of the lotion residue as possible. Next, apply a small amount of liquid laundry detergent or pre-wash product directly on the stain with an old toothbrush. Let it sit for 15 minutes before rinsing with cool water.
Once all of the lotion residue has been removed, launder as usual using the warmest temperature setting that is safe for fabric. Be sure to check the care label to make sure that cotton twill can withstand the heat. If possible, add a color-safe bleach to the wash cycle for added measure. If the stain persists, repeat the previous steps again until it is fully removed.
With these tips, you’ll have no trouble getting rid of those tough suntan lotion stains from your cotton twill fabric!
