Step 1: Gently Brush or Blot the Stain

Don’t scrub stain. Instead, gently brush off any excess material with a soft toothbrush. You can also use a dry cloth to blot the area. Just make sure to use a very light hand and not press down too hard.

Step 2: Pretreat the Stain with a Mild Soap Solution

In a bucket or small bowl, mix together a teaspoon of mild dish detergent with one quart of cool water. Dip an old cloth or brush into the solution and dab it onto the stained area. Let the solution sit on the fabric for five minutes before proceeding.

Step 3: Rinse, Wash, & Dry

Rinse pretreated area of cotton chambray fabric with warm water. Wash the item as usual in the washing machine. When you’re done, dry it in the dryer or hang it in the sun to air dry.

Tips & Tricks to Keep in Mind

  • Before using any cleaning solution, always check the care label on the fabric. This will ensure that you are using the appropriate method.
  • Never rub or scrub the fabric while pretreating or rinsing.
  • If the stain persists after the first treatment, repeat steps 1-3 until it is completely gone.
