Step 1: Blot Stain

The first step is to stop the stain from spreading. Take a cloth or rag and blot the stained area as much as possible. Do not rub the material as it may cause stain to set in more deeply.

Step 2: Pre-Treat the Stain

After blotting the stain, apply a pre-treating solution to the area. You can use a commercial pre-treating cleaning solution like Shout, or make your own with 1 tablespoon of liquid detergent and 1/2 cup of warm water. Cover the stain with the solution and let it sit for 15 minutes.

Step 3: Wash the Trunks

After the pre-treatment, put the trunks in washing machine and wash them on the gentle cycle using cool water. Add laundry detergent and, if available, an oxygen-based bleach like Oxi Clean. Do not place any other items in the washing machine as it may spread the stain onto other clothes. Wash the trunks as soon as possible as the longer you wait, the harder the stain will be to remove.

Step 4: Air-Dry the Trunks

After washing, hang the trunks up to air dry. Do not put them in the dryer as the heat will set the stain, making it impossible to remove. Inspect the area when they are dry to see if stain has been removed. If not, repeat steps 2-4 until the stain has been eliminated.
