Before you do anything else, scrap off as much of the spilled sparkling wine as possible. Dip a butter knife or other flat-edged utensil in cold water and use it to carefully remove the residue. Take care not to rub against the fabric’s delicate fibers.
Next, prepare a cleaning pre-treatment solution. Mix 1 teaspoon of liquid dish detergent with 1 cup of cool water. Use a clean white cloth dipped into the solution to blot the stained area. Don’t rub or scrub the fabric, as this could cause further damage to its delicate fibers. Instead, press down gently and then let the solution sit for a few minutes before proceeding.
Once you’ve finished applying the pre-treatment solution, rinse off with fresh water. You can use a damp cloth to dab away any remaining residue as you rinse. Be sure to press down gently and be mindful of the fabric’s delicate fibers.
For stubborn sparkle wine stains, it can be helpful to use an oxygen-based stain remover (aka chlorine-free bleach). To apply, simply blend one part of the cleaner with five parts of cold water. Use a damp cloth to dab fabric with the cleaning solution, then rinse thoroughly.
Finally, dry the fabric and then iron affected area at a low temperature. This should help set color and texture of the fabric and prevent further staining.
