Sparkling wine contains high levels of tannin which, when not treated properly, can permanently stain fabrics. The most important first step is to act fast. Blot up as much of the spill as possible, without rubbing or scrubbing. Use paper towels, a white cloth or an absorbent kitchen roll to soak up liquid.
Once you’ve eventually got the wine stains out, you will need to prepare a cleaning solution to ensure that no discoloration remains. A good combination is made up of one teaspoon of liquid detergent, one tablespoon of white vinegar, and two cups of cool water. Submerge the stained area in solution for roughly five minutes, then rinse it off in cool water.
After drying off the fabric, you will need to treat the silk to preserve its delicate nature. Try brushing it out with a soft brush or comb, ensuring none of fibers become tangled or matted. If necessary, add a dash of enzyme-free laundry detergent to a bowl of cold water and soak the material for a few minutes. Finally, rinse item off with cold water, and hang it up in a shaded area to air dry.
