The last thing you want is for an evening out among friends to end with an accident. But when it comes to spills, particularly from sparkling wines, accidents do happen. Often, these types of stains can be difficult to remove from evening wear due to their sugar and alcohol content. But don't panic! Our guide will walk you through process of removing a stain from your favorite evening gown.
The first step in tackling any spill is to act fast. Always blot the stained area gently with a paper towel or clean cloth before you do anything else. This will help to prevent the stain from spreading.
Create a DIY solution by mixing two teaspoons of liquid dishwashing detergent with one cup of lukewarm water. Dip a white cloth into mixture and dab it onto the stain, careful not to rub or scrub the fabric. Then rinse the affected area with cold running water and blot with a dry cloth until all moisture is absorbed.
Soak a cloth in white vinegar and dab it onto the stain. Be sure to use plain white vinegar only, as other types of vinegar may permanently discolor the fabric. Blot stained fabric with the vinegar-dipped cloth. Rinse the fabric with cold water, then repeat the process from Step 2.
Once the stain has been removed to the best of your ability, you can wash the evening gown immediately. Make sure to use cold water only, as hot water may set the stain. Using a mild detergent, wash gown in the washing machine on the gentle cycle, being sure to add fabric softener—this helps to break down any remaining residue. After washing, hang the evening gown out to air dry away from direct sunlight.
