It's never ideal when you're sipping on a glass of bubbly only to realise you've spilt some on your clothing. But, don't worry - there are plenty of ways to remove those pesky sparkling wine stains.

1. Blot as Soon as Possible

The first thing to do when you encounter a sparkling wine stain is to blot it with a damp cloth or paper towel. Don't rub it - this will spread the stain further.

2. Pre-treat with an Enzyme Cleaner

Once you've blotted away any excess liquid, pre-treat stain with an enzyme cleaner. These types of cleaners work to break down proteins and fat, which can help diminish the stain.

3. Soak in Cold Water

Soak the stained article of clothing in cool water for about 30 minutes. This helps to 'breathe' the stain out.

4. Wash with Detergent

After soaking your garment in cool water, you'll want to wash as normal but with a detergent like a natural or plant-based detergent. Be sure to use cold or warm water, not hot.

5. Air Dry

Once your garment is washed, lay it flat or hang it to air dry. Avoid putting it in the dryer until you're absolutely sure stain has been removed.

Tips

  • If the stain persists, mix equal parts vinegar and water and re-apply.
  • Always read care instructions before treating stain.
  • Spot test any cleaner on a small part of fabric before applying to the entire area.

What type of enzyme cleaner should I use?

We recommend using a bio-based enzyme cleaner for removing sparkling wine stains from clothing. Be sure to spot test the product before applying it to your clothing.

Do I have to hand wash the article of clothing?

It's best to hand wash any garment with a sparkling wine stain. However, depending on fabric and care instructions, you may be able to machine wash in cold or warm water.
