The first step in tackling any stain is to remove as much of the substance as possible. Using a clean white cloth, gently blot the stained area until no more liquid can be absorbed. Do not rub or scrub the area, as this might cause the stain to spread.
Before adding your board shorts to the washing machine, apply a laundry detergent directly onto the affected area. It's better to use a detergent designed for pretreating than a standard detergent. Gently rub the detergent into the fabric and let it sit for 30 minutes before continuing.
Read the care label on your board shorts to determine the appropriate cycle to use. Generally, board shorts should be washed on a delicate cycle with mild detergent, but it's important to follow the manufacturer's instructions.
White vinegar, when added to your load of laundry, acts as a natural fabric softener and helps to restore original color of your board shorts. Add 1/2 cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle and let the cycle complete.
It’s best to hang your board shorts to air dry after laundering them. When hung properly, it will help to prevent further shrinkage or changes in the fit.
While sparkling wine stains on board shorts may seem daunting to remove, with the right know-how, they can be easily treated. Remember these steps—blotting the stain with a clean white cloth, pre-treating with a laundry detergent, washing according to care label instructions, reviving color with white vinegar, and air drying—to safely eliminate stains for good!
