If the stain is still wet, the best thing you can do is blot it gently with a clean cloth or towel. Start by pressing the cloth onto the stained area and repeating this until the fabric is no longer wet. Avoid rubbing the stain as this can cause it to spread.
Once it has dried, you can use detergent and water to help remove the stain. Fill a bucket or basin with lukewarm water and dissolve a small amount of detergent into it. Submerge the garment and leave it to soak for around 30 minutes, stirring the mix occasionally. When finished, rinse the garment thoroughly before setting it aside to dry.
If you still find stain is not coming out, you can also use vinegar to help. Mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a bowl, stirring until combined. Apply resulting solution directly to the stain with a cloth and let it sit for a few minutes, then rinse with cold water.
If all else fails, the best option may be to bring the item to a professional dry cleaner. While this may cost a little more than other methods, it often yields the best results and is the safest choice.
